Dear writer:
Hello, and thank you for writing for me! I’m adigeon here on Dreamwidth, and I’m
Real life obligations haven't nicely lined up with the sign-up period for me, so this letter is a bit more sparse than I usually go for. You'll find here some general likes and notes about the canons I signed up with. If you're interested in more detailed prompts, I signed up/wrote longer letters with some of these canons for hc exchange and chocolate box. (I've tried to write longer canon notes for the ships I haven't nominated before -- if we've matched on something where I've left shorter notes, please don't think I prefer a different canon!)
(Also, sorry for any HTML weirdness/odd padding -- Dreamwidth's HTML parser is not on my side right now.)
Table of Contents
0. General DNWs and Likes
My DNWs are A/B/O, ageplay, character bashing, humiliation, infidelity, issuefic, non-canon character deaths, non-canon dubcon or noncon, pregnancy, scat/watersports/etc, second person POV, unhappy endings (melancholy or bittersweet is fine, but please no darkfic or whump-no-comfort), unrequested AUs that change the canon setting, and untagged self-harm or substance abuse (either is fine, but I need a warning.)
My likes are character studies, characters working together, competency and competency kink, first time/getting together fic, hurt/comfort, loyalty kink, mutual pining, mutual respect between characters who don’t get along, partnerships, seemingly unrequited pining, snark/banter, and touch starvation.
For ships I've requested that break up a canon relationship, handle things however you see fit, as long as there's no infidelity, poly, or character death/character bashing.
1. Broadchurch
Alec Hardy/Ellie Miller
Canon notes: I adore this show, and I love everything about Hardy and Miller’s chemistry. I love Hardy’s guilt and lack of social skills; I love Miller’s optimism and then her losing her optimism and then her refusing to be broken by it all. In season three, I love their restrained comfort with each other: Miller being unafraid to tell Hardy off for being rude, Hardy admitting he doesn’t know how to handle his daughter… There’s this lingering way they could be friends if Hardy put the effort in, but he won’t put the effort in and Miller doesn’t mind, that really intrigues me. (Hardy’s general restraint/guilt and non-stop repression and self-recrimination is kryptonite for me in a character; bless him.)
2. Criminal Minds
Aaron Hotchner/Spencer Reid
Canon notes: Criminal Minds is such a well-loved canon for me, even after so many seasons. Hotch is one of my favorite character types - the well-meaning, extremely repressed, stoically suffering boss. I love how competent he is (at most things besides communicating with his loved ones and taking care of himself...), and I love how seriously he takes his job. Hotch choosing to move out of law and into the BAU because he wanted to stop bad things from happening, rather than punishing people after the fact, pretty much defines his character for me.
And as for Reid...I love his addiction arc, I love him resenting, at first, the way the team treats him, I love him slowly coming into his own and getting more confident. There's something so fun about his over-the-top intelligence combined with his inability (or unwillingness) to play social games. Most of all I see Reid as hyper-competent in some really specific ways, but also pretty alienated from the people around him. I kinda see him as understanding social games/social skills more than he lets on, but choosing not to participate mostly because he doesn't find it interesting.
Hotch and Reid's dynamic is so interesting to me I think because they're both restrained and repressed in their own ways - Hotch's whole, well, Hotch-ness, and Reid's fear of his own mind, and his awful childhood. It makes the moments where they trust and rely on each other all the more delightful. (L.D.S.K. is what originally sold me on the ship, years ago.)
I'm not picky about timelines for Criminal Minds -- a lot of my favorite fic was written after seasons 3/4/etc. Please feel free to diverge from canon at any point. But Reid crossing paths with Hotch after years of Hotch being in witness protection could be fascinating, too!
3. Marvel Cinematic Universe
General MCU note: Since Endgame comes out before fic is due for this, please feel free to handle the events of Endgame however you'd like. Handwave it, set fic before it happens, commit to a sequence of events that might get jossed by the movie; I won't mind!
Scott Lang/Sam Wilson
Canon notes: There's so much I love about these two together. Just individually, Scott and Sam are both so great -- they're both normal humans trying to keep up with superpowered heroes, but neither of them takes themselves (or the superpowered heroes they're trying to keep up with) too seriously (Scott's fanboyishness for Cap aside...) I love how irrepressible Scott is, how much he enjoys being a dad, and how excited he was to help Steve in Civil War. And I love how practical Sam is without being mercenary; his role in CA:TWS is one of my favorite parts of the movie. He's self-assured and good with people, and he also trusts his people ("You don't have to come with me."/"I know. When do we start?"). It's so easy to see Scott and Sam clicking as a 'ship and not just as comrades in arms -- commiserating about keeping up with the (sometimes idiotic) superpowered humans they're allied with, bonding about being a little overwhelmed, or even just amusing themselves by arguing with each other. I also love the contrast of their backgrounds -- Scott, the felon trying to make things right by his daughter by fighting for a greater good, and Sam, the soldier who came back to the fray to follow a man he believes in.
Karl Mordo/Stephen Strange
Canon notes: The thing that charms me about this ship so much is Mordo and Strange's rival dignities, so to speak. It's Mordo to save Strange from the robbers while he's trying to find Kamar-Taj, and even then, Strange seems so marvelously unimpressed by Mordo -- he's at Kamar-Taj to get his hands fixed, after all, not learn magic. So Mordo being trusted by the Ancient One and generally a more competent sorcerer than Strange isn't something that Strange seems particularly riled by. In the first part of the movie he's so proud, right, but he doesn't mind so much being so bad at magic at the start. He's willing to put in the work, willing to struggle and study, but despite his ego, he's not threatened by Mordo. And I see Mordo as very much respecting Strange's seriousness, even when he finds Strange exasperating or short-sighted. Which makes it all the more bittersweet that in canon, Mordo ends up taking such a dark turn -- Mordo, who'd saved Strange and brought him to Kamar-Taj, turning against the mystic arts.
I'm super open to canon divergence for this ship. If you'd prefer have Mordo as having left the Order but not having become a murderer, I'd definitely be open to that! (I'd also love anything where Strange is still learning at Kamar-Taj, before Mordo becomes disillusioned and leaves.)
I know this is an enemies ship, so I should note that while I've DNWed unhappy endings/darkfic, I'm by no means expecting a happy reconciliation for Mordo and Strange (though I would love that too!!) Anything between these two would be great, so long as it doesn't end with Mordo killing Strange or Mordo managing to defeat and indefinitely imprison Strange.
Tony Stark/Stephen Strange
Canon notes: I loved Tony and Stephen's rapport in Infinity War so much. I love the way they're so similar, but they don't know that about each other, so their weird, prickly banter is all the more loaded. (Stephen snapping Unlike everyone else in your life, I don't work for you is so deliciously ironic given Stephen's arc in the Doctor Strange movie...) Also, Stephen's such a great target for h/c (pain's an old friend and all...) For Tony and Stephen, I'd love something where they start off still at odds with each other, at least in some way. It probably goes without saying, but feel free to handwave Endgame/invent Endgame events.
4. xXx
Xander Cage/Xiang
Canon notes: xXx, the canon where literally every character can be described by shine on, you crazy, lethal diamond. I initially watched xXx 3: Return of Xander Cage purely because Donnie Yen was in it, and goodness I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Xander and Xiang are my favorite types of action movie jackass - cocky adrenaline addicts with hearts of gold. And them going from enemies throwing grenades at each other to teaming up at the end, Xiang distraight after thinking he's seen Xander killed in front of him? So great. Anything with these two post-canon would be wildly fun. Case fic where they need to save the world? Team hijinks while they stay on the run from the government after blowing up a plane over Detroit?
I love the other team members, too, so if you want to include them/include background relationships, please don't hesitate.
